DETROIT WEDDING: ROBIN & PETE 9.18.11

October 30th, 2011

I was very much looking forward to this wedding because the bride was my beautiful cousin Robin and of course it would be my first Detroit area wedding!  I flew in from LA a few days prior to the wedding and had a blast hanging out with Robin, Pete and the cast of wedding party members.  For the very first time I had my toes bedazzled at the singing manicurist’s nail shop.  Really an experience everyone should have on their bucket list!

Although in the days prior to the wedding a fall chill had hit the air, the actual wedding day dawned sunny and temps were expected to be in the high 70s, which in my opinion is just perfect for an outdoor ceremony in the Midwest!  I met up with the girls at the hair salon early in the morning and we had lots of laughs and silly antics.  After everyone was sufficiently coiffed, we zipped over to Glen Oaks Country Club for the rest of the preparations.  While Robin was getting her make-up done, the rest of us took turns heading downstairs to peak at the room as it was turned into a wedding reception and oohed and aaahed at the lush flowers. I only got reprimanded once for touching the girls’ bouquets but seriously it was all in the name of photos!  Robin’s sister and MOH thoughtfully arranged for a quick lunch for the crew and then everyone helped Robin into her dress.  I love the actual moment of transformation from a bride getting ready into a bride ready to get married!  I am still in awe of Robin’s tasteful alterations to her dress with the straps that matched her ruched bodice and the lovely flower belt.  Once Robin was ready, I headed outside to locate Pete and the guys and arranged the positioning for the First Glance.

I kept my emotions in check as Robin made her way down the garden path and I procrastinated letting Pete turn around to see her because I was loving his expressions and the emotion.  But no worries, when I finally let him turn around to see hi beautiful bride – he let some emotions fly and that just one of many reasons why I love the wedding day! EMOTION!!!  So here is where I say Thank You, Pete, for being an emotional groom and allowing for some amazing photographs of those moments.  After a short time with Robin and Pete we headed into wedding party and family photos and got every single one out of the way prior to the ceremony!  This makes for a smooth flowing day once we get all those groupings checked off the list.

The intimate and touching ceremony was set in the garden at Glen Oaks and attended by Robin and Pete’s closest friends and family.  With the blue skies, a lush garden, the gently setting sun and comfortable September afternoon temperature – the day really was perfect!  After we all cheered on their new union, guests headed inside the clubhouse for cocktails and mingling and then of course, on to the party in celebration of Robin and Pete!!!  One of the highlights of the evening, besides the heartfelt toasts by their siblings, was the 24′ desert table that needed it’s own room!  I’m drooling just remembering all the delicious sweets, cakes and fruit on display.

Congrats you two! Thanks for being such wonderful hosts and allowing me to play a special role in your day!  Now come visit us in California!

This raw emotion is the stuff photojournalists dream of!

A tired bride, typical for the end of the night!

Linda & Roger 5.24.09

July 7th, 2009

I must admit my initial meeting with Linda and Roger was one of the hardest meetings for me last spring.  I had my new puppy, Mater, for less then a week and I was spending an entire day away from home with meetings and portrait sessions.  Linda and Roger graciously let me ooh and ahh and show pictures of Mater on my camera phone and then told me all about their darling doggy, Mango, and his role in the wedding complete with a doggy tux!  This was meant to be!  Mango even joined us for the engagement session downtown last fall.

Sunday, May 24th opened with glorious blue skies and wonderfully warm temps. Possibly the best conditions for the outdoor ceremony planned at Klein Creek Country Club. The entire wedding party, including Mango, were getting ready at the Westin in Itasca.  Linda and Roger had a special moment alone, seeing each other for the first time in their full wedding regalia. Then Mango and the rest of the wedding party joined in for some pictures. We had to get creative and work around the golfers and some long drives at Klein Creek for the pre-ceremony photo session.

Linda’s family hails from Laos & Thailand and Roger’s family is from China, together they provided each of their families the first Americanized wedding with American wedding traditions. And of course, a photobooth, with printed snapshots as the wedding favors!

Maureen & Jason – 03.21.09

March 21, 2009 was my sixth & final wedding in Arizona for the 2008-2009 wedding season. And I must say it was fantastic!  I met Maureen and Jason at the Bridal Fashion Debut last June and we had a great first conversation in my booth. I was very excited to learn that Jason grew up in Deerfield, IL, which is not far from my youthful stomping ground in Skokie, IL.  Like-minded North Shore folks tend to get along well.

Maureen and Jason opted to see each other prior to the ceremony to get the wedding party and family photos done and shorten the time needed for photos during the cocktail hour.  I loved being able to capture that special moment during the first glance they had of each other.  The wedding party was able to look on from a distance in the hotel lobby and share in the emotion as well.

The weather was typical Phoenix in March, hot with the afternoon sun shining!  I was excited to work with the backlit bride and groom while the sun was setting during the ceremony.

I have been asked by other wedding professionals how weddings in IL differ from weddings in AZ and my initial response is many of the AZ weddings have the ceremony and reception at one location, with the ceremony & cocktail portion outdoors. No traveling from location to location or limos or trolleys needed. In IL, Chicagoland to be more specific, most of the weddings take place at a church and then I get to romp around Chicago with the wedding party for a couple hours of photos. In my opinion, the differences are awesome. Each time presenting a different perspective and mentally challenging for me.

In all, it was a fantastic day without any exciting stories or mishaps.  Perfect, if you will.  I had a blast with Maureen and Jason’s friends and family and hope to see more of them in the future.
